Timeless Possibilities: When Kairos and Chronos Meet

Uncategorized Mar 16, 2023

We are very time-conscious, especially in our American understanding of time. We want to make every second count, make the most of every moment, and live our life to the full. But in the scripture, there are a couple of ways to look at the concept of time.

In the Bible, the Greek word "kairos" is often used to refer to a specific moment or season of opportunity or significance, rather than simply the passing of time. Kairos is often contrasted with "chronos," which refers to ordinary, sequential time. Therefore, while chronos measures time in a linear, sequential way, kairos emphasizes the importance of the right moment for certain events or actions to take place.

Kairos is often used to describe a critical moment in God's plan or the arrival of the "fullness of time" (Galatians 4:4) for a particular event or prophecy to be fulfilled. For example, in Mark 1:15, Jesus declares that "the time [kairos] is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand." Similarly, in Luke 19:44, Jesus laments that Jerusalem did not recognize "the time [kairos] of your visitation."

The concept of kairos emphasizes the importance of being attentive to the present moment and recognizing the unique opportunities and challenges it presents. It also suggests that certain moments are imbued with spiritual significance and require a response of faith and obedience to God's will.

How does kairos and chronos have to do with finding your life purpose? So glad that you asked!

There are several steps that Christian women can take in the planning and spiritual discernment stages to find their purpose in life. Here are some possibilities.

  • Prayer and reflection: Start by spending time in prayer and reflection, asking God to reveal His will for your life. Set aside time (chronos) each day to read the Bible, meditate, and journal your thoughts and feelings.
  • Seek guidance from trusted mentors: Seek advice and guidance from trusted Christian mentors or spiritual leaders who can help you discern your calling and provide practical guidance for achieving your goals. This includes both concepts, kairos and chronos. Maybe you are trying to discern ‘what’s next’ in your life. A friend, pastor, or coach can help you to process and find a way forward for your future.
  • Identify your strengths and passions: Take inventory of your strengths, talents, and passions. Consider how you can use these gifts to serve others and make a positive impact in the world. You have come into this world ‘for such a time as this!” (Esther 4:14)
  • Set specific and measurable goals: Develop a plan (chronos and kairos) with specific and measurable goals that align with your calling and passions. This may involve setting career goals, pursuing education or training, or volunteering for a cause that aligns with your values.
  • Practice self-care: Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Get enough rest, eat well, exercise regularly, and engage in spiritual practices that nourish your soul.
  • Stay connected to God: Stay connected to God through prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers. You can’t lead from an empty well. Stay open to God's leading and be willing to follow His path, even if it leads in unexpected directions.

In summary, Christian women can apply the concepts of chronos and kairos time to find their purpose in life by integrating practical planning with spiritual discernment. This involves setting goals and taking action to achieve those goals, while also recognizing and responding to the unique opportunities and challenges that arise in life, and discerning God's will in the present moment. It’s where possibilities meet opportunities.
