Game Day

design your life Nov 06, 2020

I live in the southeast part of the United States. For those who may not know, this is the heart of the SEC football conference. In the fall, the number one topic of conversation (at least before Covid), was football. People in this part of the country eat, breathe, and dream about football. Many people have countdown apps to keep track of how many days until the first kick off for the season.

How many of us approach our day -every day- like it was the first day of football season? Game day.   What would that look like for us?  For me, it looks like I have put in place several things to prepare for the next day.

If we take the Hebrew idea of a day, we really begin the night before. That means we begin preparation as we think about the upcoming day the prior evening.

Although I am far from perfect in my approach, here are some of the goals I have as I plan the next day.

 1.   My goal is to keep the main thing the main thing. As I look at my life purpose, I want to make sure that I am on target with what is planned for the next day. How am I living into that purpose?

2.  I mapped out my day.  Regardless of what is happening in my life, whether I’m going into the office or not, I plot out my day. When I fail to do this, I end up squandering my time. This becomes really critical to me, because I realize that every day is precious and the time, I have to serve this side of heaven, is limited. My goal is to make the most of every day and live it to its fullest.

As I map out my day, I work to plot out the most important things first, so that at the end of the day I accomplish the primary aspects of my projects. I also only keep one calendar. I only have one life, so I can’t keep one for my time at the office. I have messed myself up several times by keeping two distinct calendars. One life. One calendar for me. Period.

I know these might seem like two simple, little steps, but it helps me to prepare and get ready for each new day. I want to look on tomorrow as if it were game day. I prepared, I’ve gotten ready, and I have my plan. I see this as part of being a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. How’s your day game day going?
